FDA Warns NSAIDs Effective For Pain Relief But Have Disadvantages For Long-Term Use

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 13, 2015 ) Portland, Oregon -- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are clinicians' preferred medications for relief of inflammation and the pain it causes. They work fairly quickly, but are offset by their potentially deadly side effects when taken for extended periods. Clinical research has amply demonstrated that a curcumin supplement is just as effective and has no dangerous side effects with long-term usage.

"Curcumin is the ingredient in turmeric that relieves inflammation," said VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan. "Turmeric is considered safe by the Food and Drug Administration, is well tolerated and is associated with no detrimental side effects."

Inflammation is the body's response to fight injuries and infection from bacterial, viral and fungal sources. In some diseases and syndromes, the body's immune system is activated even when no threat exists. Inflammation is triggered for real or imagined danger, causing swelling and pain. Curcumin is a powerful botanical that inhibits molecules that are present during inflammation and interrupts the body's inflammatory response.

NSAIDs work in much the same way, but often to the detriment of the individual. The pharmaceuticals are associated with a myriad of possible side effects that include:

• Stomach bleeding and ulcers
• Increased risk of heart attacks and stroke
• High blood pressure
• Allergic reactions
• Shortness of breath
• May exacerbate asthma
• Loss of appetite
• Dizziness
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Nausea or vomiting
• Headache
• Rash
• Drowsiness
• Adverse interaction with other medications
• Kidney problems and kidney failure
• Water retention due to the effect on kidneys
• Liver failure in rare cases
• Reye's Syndrome in children and teens with chickenpox or influenza

Many of the side effects caused by NSAIDs present little or no warning symptoms. The FDA has determined they're dangerous for long-term use, but side effects can occur at any time that individuals are taking them.

Practitioners recommend a curcumin supplement that contains 750mg of curcumin. It's essential that the supplement contain a black pepper extract to facilitate absorption. Curcumin passes quickly through the digestive system with only minimal effect unless it's accompanied by black pepper extract. Simply eating black pepper doesn't obtain the same effect.

Curcumin supplements offer consumers a natural and effective alternative to dangerous NSAID medications. It's been determined safe and several studies show it to be equally effective as prescription pharmaceuticals, but without the potential for life-threatening side effects (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
