Research Reveals Turmeric May Be Helpful For Those With Endometriosis

(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 28, 2015 ) Portland, Oregon -- Endometriosis is a condition as debilitating as arthritis. However, it only affects 10% to 20% of premenopausal women. While there are patients who do not experience symptoms, many suffer from heavy menstrual periods, pain during sex, and abdominal pain.

Recent research revealed that turmeric could have the potential to prevent and manage endometriosis. While there is yet to be any human trials, animal studies and culture tests have produced promising results. Turmeric contains an active ingredient known as curcumin that was used in the tests and is believed to have the healing power to reduce inflammation in the endometrial lesions. This is believed to result in the delay in the progression of endometriosis.

"We're certainly not at a stage where those with endometriosis should be ignoring medical advice and taking turmeric as their sole treatment. There is still a long way to go, but the results are exciting nonetheless," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

According to one study published in the Indian Journal of Biochemistry and Biophysics, curcumin can significantly reduce the inflammation caused by endometriosis. In the animal based study, it was found that curcumin contains strong anti-endometriosis properties and inhibited inflammatory action at a cellular level.

Turmeric is one of the most powerful super foods recognized today, and it is not a surprise that it is also use for medicinal purposes. Many consumers already take curcumin supplements for managing various conditions including arthritis, depression, and irritable bowels.

"There are individuals who buy turmeric powder and add it to their dishes and beverages. Others use curcumin supplements as it is easy and convenient to consume. Curcumin supplements are also believed to be more effective than turmeric powder," added O'Sullivan.

Another study conducted at the Hubei University of Medicine also found that when researchers applied curcumin into the endometrial cells, it started to reduce the proteins associated with endometriosis. Moreover, it was found that the spice could also inhibit the growth of endometriosis cells.

Curcumin has low bioavailability, meaning it is difficult for the body to absorb naturally. Health experts recommend curcumin supplements that contain a black pepper extract called BioPerine. This black pepper extract increases the bioavailability of curcumin and its absorption in the human body (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
