The Glute Bridge Exercise: Reading Chiropractor Low Back Pain Exercise
(Medical-NewsWire.com, January 31, 2015 ) Reading, UK -- According to new research by the British Chiropractic Association, over half of us are watching TV in bed before dozing off. Many more use other electronic gadgets in bed, and those of us that do, are spending up to four hours staring at these screens! Many feel this can help them get to sleep, but there are other issues involved that should be considered, especially the detrimental effect on your posture and increased spinal dysfunction.

Reading Chiropractor, Dr Andy Green (Doctor of Chiropractic) says, "Using your phone or tablet in bed is bad for you in two main ways. First the neck is usually craning upwards, forcing your spine into a curve forwards which the body struggles to restore on it's own, and secondly the brain needs to be slowing down and relaxing. Too much stimulation excites the brain making it hard for you to switch off and get to sleep."

What many of us may not have thought of is that this common habit can wreak havoc on the structure, and posture, of our bodies. More hours spent hunched over small screens or sitting in uncomfortable positions can lead to poor sleep, bad backs, painful necks, bad posture and other spinal problems.

If you need to use a gadget while you're in bed, make sure your back is supported with a pillow and that the device or the TV is at your eye level. And it's not just about your posture and spinal health-research shows that turning off the TV can better support optimal sleep, and allow your brain to slow down. The bright lights from the screens of our gadgets can stimulate our brain, negatively affecting our sleep quality.

Sleeping correctly and maintaining an ideal posture when in bed are incredibly important for your health and posture at any time. Nearly all beds are too soft and cannot allow you to maintain a correct spinal position and posture. If you rely on a soft bed, especially a memory foam mattress, then you really would benefit from chiropractic care. In the meantime you should try to sleep on your side. One sleeping position is definite no-no, and that is sleeping on your front! NEVER on your front as this puts tremendous strain on your spine and will wreck your spinal posture. You can also check how high your pillow is. If you are lying on your side does your shoulder role in front of the ear? If so the pillow is too low. If the shoulder roles behind the head then the pillow is too high. Please check this tonight!

If in doubt please ask phone the clinic and speak to one of our Reading Chiropractic team or your local Chiropractor! Get the sleep you need and protect your mind and body by making your bedroom a tech-free zone, and a correct pillow and sleep position! Then give us a call and schedule an appointment with us to protect your spine and maintain your health. As your Caversham Chiropractors we would love to help!
