Alberta Health Services In Canada Advocate Daily Vitamin D Supplements

What is Vitamin D

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 02, 2015 ) Hollywood, Florida -- Alberta Health Services in Canada are hoping to reduce the number of citizens requesting expensive vitamin D blood tests. According to reports, roughly 50,000 people in the Calgary Zone requested a vitamin D blood test in 2008, but by 2013, the number of people requesting a test had risen to over 200,000. According to Canada's top vitamin D expert, Dr. David Hanley from the University of Calgary, healthy Canadians do not need to be screened for a vitamin D deficiency. Instead, most Canadians should just assume that they need a vitamin D supplement, he said.

Audra Savage, who is also a vitamin expert, agrees with Dr. Hanley. "In the past we never knew what we know today, but now we know that almost everyone in this country could benefit from a daily vitamin D supplement." The Alberta Health Services believe that ongoing research has clearly shown that there is a nationwide vitamin D deficiency. "We already know that most Canadians have a low vitamin D status, so it's rather pointless for healthy people to request a vitamin D test. "Personally, I'd like to see these tests which are funded by the Canadian government, only being made available to certain groups," said Dr. Hanley.

Britain's National Health Service has also recently published report issued by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) that highlights a disturbingly high rate of vitamin D deficiency within the country. According to NICE, more than ten million people in England are said to be vitamin D deficient. Exact figures for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Whales have not yet been made public.

Vitamin D is produced naturally by the body when people spend time outdoors in strong sunlight, but weather conditions, along with modern day lifestyles, often prevent people from getting adequate sun exposure to activate the vitamin D production process. Many health experts have also warned that the problem is likely to get worse before it gets better. However, there are also some who believe that vitamin D deficiency has already peaked.

"We've have witnessed a dramatic increase in demand for our vitamin D3 5000 IU supplements, and our research tells us that other suppliers have seen the same thing. It's not unusual for vitamin D sales to go up when winter arrives, but we have seen a steady increase even during the summer months", said Mr. Oliver Adams, a spokesman for Hollywood based Nutra Mina. "I think people in general are becoming increasingly aware of vitamin D and the health problems that can result from a vitamin D deficiency. The sunshine vitamin is getting a lot of publicity these days", he said.

While many healthcare professionals acknowledge that vitamin D deficiency can lead to serious consequences, they do however warn that people should act responsibly when they take dietary supplements, including vitamin D which is largely considered to be a very safe supplement to take. "People who are already taking prescription drugs should always seek professional medical advice before taking dietary supplements," says the FDA.
