200,000 Injuries In 2014 Shows Athletes Are Weak In The Knees

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 02, 2015 ) London, Hendon -- A recent report by the department of orthopaedic surgery at the University of California in San Francisco has revealed that there were over 200,000 knee injuries in 2014 alone. This is far greater than any other injury and reveals that athletes are truly weak in the knees.

People make their knees fragile with all the added strain and stresses that they put on themselves. Also not stretching or exercising adds to the breakdown of muscle tissue and increases the risk of injury. Sitting most of the day combined with walking or jogging can put excessive strain on a persons weak knees.

The Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, the team physicians for the Chicago bulls, revealed that the most common type of sports injury is a knee injury. Knee injuries make up 55% of all sports injuries, making it more common than all the other injuries combined. The most common knee injuries are ACL or MCL injuries.

It's critically important to keep this area stretched and used properly with balancing exercises and warm up workouts. Exercises like balancing on one leg and bending the knee can strengthen the knee and provide the support the ACL needs to stay strong.

Many people find that over the years the overuse and damage to their knees is almost irreversible, however a strong regime of exercise and protection could make all the difference. Knee injuries are mainly acute injuries which happen from a shock or one time accident, or overuse which causes build up of strain over time.

If a person sits in a chair all day, and then going from that extreme to walking around for hours at a time, this can cause an acute or overuse injury. Athletes have to be especially careful because they put daily strain on their knees from intense running, jumping and other movements. In basketball knee injuries have become so common that Patellar Tendonitis, a common overuse injury has been dubbed the "Jumpers Knee".

Proper knee protection (http://activeathletes.info/bestkneebrace2) and a strict leg stretching and warm-up routine is important for walking, running, or dealing with arthritis problems or a previous knee injury. Knee protection comes in the form of knee braces, sometimes provided by doctors and many available online.

As well as the proper protection (http://activeathletes.info/bestkneebrace2), a strict regime of exercise, balancing workouts and warming up throughout the day should be kept. Hopefully, if the average and athletic audiences keep these in mind, there will be less knee injuries in 2015.
