(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 08, 2015 ) Las Vegas, NV -- The Chicago Development Exchange and the Chicago Department of Public Health today revealed the five teams advancing to the next round of the CIE Healthy Chicago Innovation Challenge. On February 9th, the groups will be taking the stage to pitch their concepts for enhancing the health of Chicagoan citizens, with 2 groups being chosen to pilot the program with the support of the CIE and CDPH.
CDPH Chief Innovation Officer Jay Bhatt stated... "We are thrilled to be teaming up with the Chicago Development Exchange to bring students to the center of contributing innovative options to our public health challenges. This is a great chance for us to teach students and improve the city's public health labor force, however it is also a fantastic chance for us to learn from the students of our city."
The 5 semi-finalist teams include students from the University of Chicago, the Chicago Booth School of Business, the Illinois Institute of Innovation, the IIT Institute of Design, the IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, and the North-eastern Illinois University. Their propositions target problems varying from food poisoning and dining establishment assessments to sexually transmitted diseases, health and nutrition education, and discharge procedures to minimize re-hospitalization.
The CIE Healthy Chicago Development Challenge was developed by CDPH and the CIE to stimulate development around the general public health challenges facing Chicago. John Flavin, executive director of the Chicago Development Exchange said... "The CIE Healthy Chicago Innovation Challenge lines up with our objective to motivate students from the University of Chicago and other local universities to pursue ingenious ventures in health and safety. Our partnership with CDPH offers students the chance to experience the entrepreneurial process of giving solutions to real-world problems, and finally testing them out in the community."
A graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in food science, Miss Dunson, has honed her skills on working for major food corporations, including Kraft Foods, General Mills, Vlasic Foods, Cook Household Foods, and Aurora Foods-makers of Duncan Hines, Log Cabin and Mrs. Butterworth's Syrups, Aunt Jemima frozen breakfast, and Lender's Bagels, helping to offer quality assurance and cleanliness support to food makers, with her proficiency in quality control, operations, hygiene, and pest control, with her experience in both plant production and private business positions.
Neil Speight, a father of 4, and co-director of Nevada based company "Freddie and Sebbie," said that all efforts to help reduce rates of food contamination were essential for safeguarding our children, especially in Public institutions like Schools. He added... "With confidence in the public health system at an all time low, initiatives like this will help parents see school lunches as a viable option again, parents who currently have to prepare food themselves for their kids to take to school in an insulated lunch bag. So, let's just hope that other health districts follow Chicago's initiative, who obviously do take the communities health seriously."
