Chilipad Mattress Pad Benefit Elderly Individuals During Winter

ChiliPad is best during winter.

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 09, 2015 ) Titusville, FL -- Hypothermia, the significant decrease in a person's core body temperature, is caused by exposure to above freezing temperatures. Infants, children, homeless, and elderly individuals are the groups more prone to hypothermia. This illness can lead to death. Nevertheless, it is preventable. ChiliPad cooling and heating mattress pad could protect elderly individuals from hypothermia.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that hypothermia causes about 600 deaths per year. In 2001, the annual number of deaths from hypothermia was recorded between the months of November and February. The most affected states in the U.S. are Montana, Alaska, and New Mexico. Hypothermia causes a person's enzymatic activity to slow down, leading to rhabdomyolysis, coagulopathy, renal failure, and dysrhythmias that in turn lead to death.

Mayo Clinic listed three reasons why elderly people are more at risk to hypothermia. First, they are not able to sense cold and regulate body temperature very well. Secondly, they might also have other medical conditions that disable them to regulate their body temperature. Lastly, they might have limited mobility or worst, immobility, disallowing them to move to a warmer location during winter.

CDC recommends that elderly people are monitored during winter. Caregivers must be educated about the vulnerability of these patients to hypothermia, and about alternative sources of heat. In addition, caregivers could opt to place their patients on ChiliPad mattress pad to make sure that their core body temperature does not drop to a dangerous level.

This heating and cooling mattress pad works by keeping the bed's temperature cooler or warmer depending on the current room temperature, or based on what the user prefers. This in turn also warms or cools the core body temperature of the elderly individual. ChiliPad mattress pad has in-bed coil wherein water flows. This water cools or heats depending on the direction of the electron flow.

Chili Technology claims that their ChiliPad is safe to use. The cube or control unit, which could be placed as far as six (6) feet from the bed using an extension tube, controls the electron flow. No electrical activity is happening under or close to the user, so even elderly people could use it. Electric blankets have wires that could generate ELF or extremely low electromagnetic field that is reported to cause fatigue and headaches.

Midwest Health Solutions is an authorized seller of ChiliPad and its accessories that can be purchased through Amazon.
