Dietary Supplement Manufacturers See Spike In Pre-Winter Vitamin D Sales

What Is Vitamin D

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 23, 2015 ) Hollywood, Florida -- As winter approaches, people are once again stocking up with what many call the Sunshine Vitamin. Vitamin D which is in fact technically a hormone is produced naturally by the body in response to ultra violet light exposure. The vitamin is also found in certain types of foods, including oily fish, liver, eggs and etc. It is also added to various other foods, including milk; baby formula; cereals; bread and several different types of beverages.

Generally speaking, foods are typically not considered to be a good source of vitamin D. Instead, sunlight remains the primary source of vitamin D. Ironically, vitamin D deficiency is common even in countries that get plenty of sun all year round. In many of these countries people cover up because of religious or cultural reasons. Others cover up because sunlight has been associated with skin cancer.

In other countries, people simply don't get the opportunity to spend enough time in the sun in order to meet their vitamin D requirements. This is particularly true in North America, Canada, Great Britain and several other European nations. While the weather is largely to blame in these regions, experts do however also point out that modern day lifestyles play a role as well. Interestingly, Canada's Alberta Health Services has recently advised all Canadians to start taking a daily Vitamin D supplements.

England's chief medical officer has also recently begun urging doctors to prescribe vitamin D supplements to those who are most at risk of a deficiency, including pregnant or nursing mothers, people with dark skin, those who are struggling with obesity, and elderly people, particularly those who are living in care homes. Health authorities in the United Kingdom are also calling for greater vitamin D awareness, and better access to affordable supplements.

Is this responsible for the current surge in demand? Some suppliers believe it is. "We've seen a huge increase in the demand for our vitamin D3 5000 IU supplements," said Mr. Oliver Adams, a Nutra Mina spokesman. "I think that when you have actual government agencies advocating vitamin D supplementation, people begin to listen," said Mr. Adams from the company's Hollywood office during a recent telephone interview.

Other vitamin D suppliers have also reported above average sales. "We always see an increase in sales when winter arrives, but this year has been a lot better than we could ever have hoped for," said one company representative.

So, is vitamin D3 the answer to all your health woes? Not according to Nutra Mina. "There's no magic bullet," said Nutra Mina's Oliver Adams. "Vitamin D supplements can almost certainly help you, but a healthy lifestyle should always be your primary goal. Our supplements are only there to help," he said.
