Knee And Hip Joint Problems Found To Be More Prevalent In Ex-Athletes

(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 23, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- It is well known that joints inevitably degenerate as people age. However, it seems that rate of wear and tear in the joints significantly increases in individuals who are engaged in physical activities on a regular basis. Statistical data now indicates that ex-athletes are highly susceptible to joint and hip problems.

Studies revealed that ex-athletes are more prone to joint and hip problems when compared to non-athletes. In one study, it was found that soccer players are at a higher risk for hip arthritis, even if they stop playing in the future. The study stated that players were similarly susceptible to the condition, despite never having suffered any hip injuries previously. According to experts, elite athletes are positioning themselves for joint problems later in life.

"The risk of joint and hip problems for ex-athletes is often significantly higher than the average person," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan. "However, knowing the risk is present, there are things athletes can do to help reduce their risk of developing arthritic conditions."

In a study published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, it was found that of 284 soccer and rugby players, half had reported experiencing arthritis symptoms in the weight-bearing joints, such as the hip or knee. Interestingly, the condition generally manifested a few years after their retirement. Another study indicated that former athletes who had never had previous injuries were 10 times more susceptible to hip problems compared to those who did not engage in sports.

"It is the highly physical nature of certain sports, such as repetitively kicking a soccer ball, that triggers joint deterioration, whether a player has experienced injuries or not," added O'Sullivan.

Former athletes who are already suffering with mild joint problems are turning to glucosamine supplements in the hopes that they will slow down further degeneration. Many believe that the natural alternative is safe and effective in providing joint pain relief (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
