(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 23, 2015 ) CYPRESS -- Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital recently recognized its medical staff at the Annual Physician Awards in a ceremony to honor doctors who have made a difference in the lives of patients and an impact on their peers and colleagues.
The "Cy-Fair Stars" themed ceremony honored physicians in twenty three categories, including an award for physician of the year. This year, Dr. Stella Kalu took home the coveted trophy in this category.
Dr. Kalu's passion for medicine and helping others began at an early age. In grade school, she remembers spending her time at summer day camps in Nigeria helping care for children in orphanages under the leadership of a pediatrician.
"Although I was only 10 years old, this had a profound impact on me," Dr. Kalu says. I remember interacting with the children – many that were in bad shape – holding them and feeding them. It inspired me to become a pediatrician because I knew I could someday make a difference in the lives of children."
Dr. Kalu earned her medical degree in 2000. She completed a pediatric residency at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, where she was later named chief resident of pediatrics. After completing a three year fellowship in pediatric infectious disease at UTMB in Galveston, she joined the Cy-Fair staff as a pediatric hospitalist.
In her role as a pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Kalu takes care of hospitalized children, filling the gap for pediatricians who are taking care of patients in the clinic during the day. She acts as a liaison between the pediatrician and the patient, working closely with the pediatricians to provide quality care to hospitalized patients when their pediatrician cannot physically be with their patients who are in the hospital. Pediatric hospitalists care for patients around the clock 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, being on call to answer questions from family members and provide immediate care for children who need it most. Pediatric hospitalists provide care to children for any condition that requires hospitalization – from asthma and bronchitis to stomach bugs, appendicitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and everything in between. Hospitalists admit the children to the hospital on behalf of the child's pediatrician, care for them during their hospital stay and discharge them when it's time to go home.
