According to Paula, women become camera shy as soon as they feel self-conscious of their bodies after many photography fails. "Every person has a terrible photo of themselves somewhere that makes them cringe, even people that have their picture taken all the time, like models and celebrities," says Paula. "As easy as it is to take a bad photo, it's equally just as simple to feature the beauty of a person, if you're a professional who knows how to take a flattering photo.
"I'm really specialised and passionate, and excited about what I do. I think in photography, a lot of people are too general so there ends up being a lot of mediocre photographers who do a lot of different things - a 'Jack of all trades and master of none' kind of thing. But I think it's important to specialise in a genre, especially if it's one as important as glamour photography, where the perfect photograph can change a person's life."
Paula reveals these five most common glamour photography fails:
o Impersonal experience - Some glamour photographers treat people as a number, and don't make the experience special or personal. "I don't agree with selling someone a photograph they're not in love with, just to make the sale. When a photographer or sales assistant pushes a hard sell, it cheapens the class of the photo shoot," says Paula. "I want women to feel beautiful and valued, not underwhelmed by the whole experience."
o Not following the client's wishes - Taking a flattering photograph isn't just about how the photographer wants the picture to look; it's also based around what the client wants and feels comfortable with.
o Lack of education on price - Many glamour photographers lure clients with the promise of a 'free' photo shoot, and charge extraordinary amounts for the photos afterwards. "I'm in the business of empowering women, not deceiving them," says Paula. "It's really important to me that I can create a beautiful experience and amazing images that a woman will want to buy, but ultimately the decision to purchase lies with her."
o Tacky, harsh lighting - While blue and red lighting props may seem 'edgy', nothing beats soft, natural lighting to add warmth to photographs. Paula's studio is lit by window light and gentle reflectors, making women feel secure instead of vulnerable.
o Awkward Poses - Photographers often suggest awkward and tacky 'sexy' poses to women who already feel uncomfortable. After 15 years of photographing women and studying with some of the world's top photographers, Paula knows how to take a flattering photo and has an instinctive knowledge of how to place a woman's body.
