Famous Celebrities Who Battle With Deteriorating Eyesight Are Increasing Public Awareness

4 Steps to Improving Your Vision

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 11, 2015 ) Beaverton, Oregon -- Last month Rosanne Barr revealed that she is going blind. The 62 year old sitcom queen is suffering from glaucoma and macular degeneration. Another high profile celebrity and Oscar winning actress Dame Judi Dench has also come out in public revealing her battle with macular degeneration. Now Dench relies on other people to read scripts to her, confessing that she can no longer see the person sitting in front of her. The recent revelations of Dench and Barr have brought to the spotlight a growing health concern in the United States.

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss for people over the age of 65 in America. As macular degeneration develops, straight lines start to appear wavy, until eventually central vision becomes blurred. There are two forms of macular degeneration: ‘dry' and ‘wet'; Dench has both forms in both eyes, increasing the speed of her vision loss.

For Barr, the combination of glaucoma and macular degeneration is rapidly deteriorating her vision: "My vision is closing in now. It's something weird. But there are other weird things. That one's harsh, 'cause I read a lot, and then I thought, ‘Well, I guess I could hire somebody to read for me and read to me.' But I like words and I like looking."

Vision loss can be inevitable for some people as they get older, especially for those with a family history of eye problems. However, this doesn't mean that there aren't preventative measures. Certain lifestyle changes can actually help to better support vision.

People who smoke are at risk of damaging their eyesight due to circulation problems. As the body gets older circulation also declines; further increasing the risk of vision loss for smokers. Exercising regularly will help to improve circulation. Sun damage is another risk factor for vision loss. Keeping eyes protected by wearing sunglasses can help to reduce the potential sun damage to the retina.

Perhaps one of the most overlooked factors that influences vision is diet. Foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals are essential for protecting healthy eyesight. Vitamins C, E, and beta carotene are vital for vision, along with carotenoids such as lutein. Other compounds like quercetin and lycopene also enhance eye health. While eating a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to boost access to these vital nutrients, there are also vision support supplements available that can further enhance a positive result. These can be a good option for people who want to take preventative measures against vision loss, or slow the progression of visual impairment.

As new research and technological advances are made into treating common ocular diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma, hopefully a cure will become available. In the interim, making positive lifestyle adjustments can help.
