A team of doctors from Lurie Children's Hospital recently released findings predicting a significant increase in intoxicated teenagers visiting the hospital's emergency room, the weekend of the Lollapalooza festival. Doctors believe that binge drinking among teens at the festival definitely imposes a serious public health issue and are warning parents to raise awareness in their children.
It is often discussed the damage done to Grant Park during Lollapalooza, however the issue of binge drinking among underage drinkers is rarely spoken about. The amount of underage drinking that occurs at Lollapalooza imposes a great danger on the teens in attendance.
Doctors are concerned about the welfare of these binge drinking teens, especially young women who become more vulnerable for being exploited such as sexual assault, while intoxicated. Researchers concluded that patients from Lollapalooza were more susceptible to be female. During last year's festival, over two thirds of patients who had attended Lollapalooza were female.
The research findings also found that teenagers accounted for 25 percent of ER patients during the weekend of Lollapalooza in 2014. Researchers predict that numbers will increase if parents don't heed their warning and raise awareness among their teens.
Doctors propose that parents that parents need to be aware of their teenagers during events like Lollapalooza. "Everything starts with the parents, and making them more aware," stated Dr. Sarah McAndrew, chief resident at Lurie Children's Hospital.
