Studies Show That Abuse of ADHD Medication is On The Rise Among College Students

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 21, 2015 ) Charlotte, NC -- According to a study conducted by The Coalition to Prevent ADHD Medication Misuse, about 75 percent of students are lead to believe that their peers are illegally using ADHD prescription drugs. According to CPAMM, about 74 percent of college students who use stimulant prescription drugs obtain them from friends. About 67 percent of college students are familiar with ADHD prescription drug misuse, and about 73 percent find the misuse to be harmful.

It is reported that some students are taking stimulant prescription drugs which have not been prescribed to them including Adderall, Vivance, Conserta, Ritalin, and Dexadrine. Drugs such as Adderall tends to help give individuals an edge which helps them study for longer time spans, as well as have better concentration. These characteristics are what makes these drugs so appealing to college students who do not suffer from ADHD.

Allen O'Barr, a psychiatrist and the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services in University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, describes these stimulant drugs as "performance enhancers".

O'Barr commented that UNC students are misusing prescription ADHD drugs, but schools all across the nation are experiencing the same issue with their students misuse. "If you're competing in an academic environment, to be able to perform and you have all these other people that you're competing with and some of these people have access to a medication that allows them to focus more or allows them to be able to stay up for 36 hours without needing sleep in the short run? They may do better," said O'Barr.

Psychiatrists advises that there are many consequences that may occur as a result of abusing prescription drugs. Prescription drug misuse can ultimately cause trouble later in life because it may cause individuals to develop the habit of taking shortcuts not only in school , but also in life.

An associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Charlotte comments "To help put a decrease in the misuse of ADHD prescription drugs, people with a prescription absolutely must stop giving their friends their prescription. Prescription drug misuse and abuse are two very serious issues, both are preventative. It takes initiative from everyone including doctors, pharmacies, and the individuals who are being prescribed these drugs. I strongly encourage anyone who may be misusing or abusing drugs to seek help immediately. Also if you know someone who who has a prescription misuse or abuse problem, encourage them to seek help."
