Omega-3 Fish Oil Vital For Brain Development

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 16, 2015 ) Trittau, Schleswig-Holstein -- A new study showing that omega-3 fatty acids are vital for the developing brain has been applauded by Dr. Tobias Ihde, creator and developer of the popular Optimum Omega 3 Fish Oil supplement.

The research, conducted by neurobiologists at the University of California – Irvine, showed for the first time that deficiencies in what are known as n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, can limit brain growth during fetal development and early in life.

Dr. Tobias Ihde, CEO and president of DTI UG, added, "This is another extremely important study proving that it's never too early to have a diet rich in omega-3 fish oil. All mothers and, in fact, any women considering becoming pregnant should be consuming these fatty acids."

Published in The Journal of Neuroscience the study identified for the first time how deficits in fatty acids cause molecular changes in the developing brain that result in constrained growth of neurons and the synapses that connect them.

The UCI team's study monitored African clawed frogs because frog embryos develop outside the mother and are translucent, enabling researchers to actually see dynamic changes in neurons and their synaptic connections in the intact, live embryos.

Lead researcher Susana Cohen-Cory, professor of neurobiology and behavior, said, "Additionally, when we changed the diets of DHA-deficient mothers to include a proper level of this dietary fatty acid, neuronal and synaptic growth flourished and returned to normal in the following generation of tadpoles."

DHA is essential for the development of a fetus's eyes and brain, especially during the last three months of pregnancy. It makes up 10 to 15 percent of the total lipid amount of the cerebral cortex. DHA is also concentrated in the light-sensitive cells at the back of the eyes, where it accounts for as much as 50 percent of the total lipid amount of each retina.

Optimum Omega 3 fish oil contains three to five times more DHA and EPA than most other brands in the market. It is purified through one of the most sophisticated molecular distillation processes available and is enteric coated. It has been a best-seller on amazon.com.

Many studies have shown that Omega-3 fish oil supplements provide protection against heart disease and are beneficial for brain health, the joints, eyes and immune system, skin and hair.
