Research Revealed That Onions Could Help Prevent Inflammation

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 19, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- There are many spices and herbs that are not just known for their taste, but also for the therapeutic benefits they offer. Onions, for instance, are not just low in calories and have high levels of healthy components. They are also known to reduce inflammation and to be helpful among arthritis sufferers.

Research revealed that onions could help prevent inflammation. Onions have high levels of flavonoids, which are antioxidants that eliminate free radicals before they cause damage in the body.

"One flavonoid present in onions is called quercetin, which is believed to inhibit inflammation-causing prostaglandins, leukotrienes and histamines in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients. Quercetin is also known to lower LDL or low-density lipoprotein, which results in the reduction of heart disease risk. It is also believed to be helpful in preventing the progression of cancer," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry published a study that found onions have powerful compounds known as GPCS, or gamma-L-glutamyl-trans-S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide. These compounds are believed to have the capacity to inhibit bone breakdown. It is even believed by other researchers to be an effective treatment for osteoporosis.

Rhui Hai Liu, M.D., PhD, associate professor of food science, stated that the strong flavor in shallots as well as in yellow and red onions, indicates they have more powerful health-promoting properties. There was even a study from Cornell University that found stronger flavored onions tend to have more disease-fighting chemicals.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided some tips on how to make onions a great addition to dishes. Onions can be a wonderful ingredient for salads, sandwiches, stir-frys and side dishes. They can be eaten raw or cooked.

"Consuming food that has healing properties is one of the most popular ways to improve overall health. Onions and other spices are considered to be therapeutic and beneficial to individuals who are suffering from certain conditions," added O'Sullivan.

In addition to onions, there are also other anti-inflammatory spices that are popular nowadays. Curcumin, which is the key ingredient of a medicinal spice known as turmeric, is popularized by its anti-inflammatory properties.

Arthritis patients who want to take advantage of the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin often use supplements. There are many curcumin supplements available in the market today, and those that contain BioPerine are most recommended by experts. BioPerine is a black pepper extract that can increase nutrient absorption in the body (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
