Omega-3 Fish Oil Helps Diabetics With Nerve Damage

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 21, 2015 ) Trittau, Schleswig-Holstein -- Dr. Tobias Ihde, creator and developer of the popular Optimum Omega 3 Fish Oil supplement, has praised new research showing that omega-3 fish oil helps diabetic patients with nerve damage.

A study published in the Journal of Neurophysiology indicates that fish oil supplements can actually restore the condition of nerves damaged from diabetes.

About half of people with diabetes suffer from nerve damage, or neuropathy, for which there is no cure. The most effective treatment, keeping blood sugar in control, only slows progression of the nerve damage.

The study, conducted at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa compared treatment with diabetic and non-diabetic mice.

This research followed similar results from studies with rats with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It is hoped that the same outcome will eventually be seen in human patients.

Dr. Tobias Ihde, CEO and president of DTI UG, said, "This is a great new study and is another step forward in validating the widespread benefits of omega-3 fish oil supplementation. Everyone should consider omega-3s as an essential part of their daily diet."

Studies elsewhere using omega-3 fatty acid supplements for obesity and diabetes have reported better blood sugar handling, liver function and reduced inflammation.

Mark Yorek, lead investigator of the Iowa City study, commented, "Our animal studies suggest that fish oil can reverse some of the harmful effects of diabetes on the nerves. Our intent is to do more animal studies to demonstrate that fish oil treatment can reverse the harmful effects of diabetes on nerves even after a long period of poorly controlled diabetes. After completion of this work, we hope to begin studies with diabetic patients with neuropathy."

Optimum Omega 3 contains three to five times more DHA and EPA than most other brands in the market. It is purified through one of the most sophisticated molecular distillation processes available and is enteric coated. It has been a best-seller on amazon.com.

Many studies have shown that Omega-3 fish oil supplements provide protection against heart disease and are beneficial for brain health, the joints, eyes and immune system, skin and hair.
