Research Investigates The Link Between Hearing Loss And Rheumatoid Arthritis

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 25, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Rheumatoid arthritis has been linked to a wide variety of medical conditions. Patients often suffer from a myriad of pain and discomfort. Hearing loss is another condition that is associated with arthritis.

Research investigates the link between hearing loss and rheumatoid arthritis. According to researchers, hearing loss could be due to the disease itself or the medications that patients use to treat it. Clinical trials revealed that they found a higher prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss among patients who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. Sensorineural hearing loss usually takes place when the hair cells in the cochlea poorly function.

In a study, it was found that 42.7 percent of individuals suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. On the other hand, only 15.9 percent from the controlgroup reported some type of hearing loss. There were also other smaller studies that found the same results. Hearing loss was also linked to juvenile idiopathic arthritis, or JIA, and psoriatic arthritis, or PsA.

"There is a possibility that the medications used by arthritis patients for their aches and pains are causing the hearing loss," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The American Journal of Epidemiology published a study in 2012 that revealed women who took acetaminophen and ibuprofen two or more days every week were more likely to experience hearing loss than those who did not take or rarely took pain killers.

It was also found that women who took ibuprofen in the maximum of three days in a week experienced 13 percent increased risk. On the other hand, those who used the medication seven days a week experienced a 24 percent increased risk. The link between hearing loss and the use of analgesics seemed to be stronger in women who were younger than 50.

According to researchers, there is a chance that medications reduce the flow of the blood to the cochlea. It can also be that these drugs deplete certain factors that protect the cochlea from damage. There were also studies that found the link between aspirin use and hearing loss. Experts believe that hearing loss should be treated immediately before it leads to brain atrophy and accelerated cognitive decline.

In a study from the Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health, it was found that cognitive decline was not only faster among individuals with hearing loss, but also those with hearing loss were more susceptible to developing cognitive decline. This demonstrates the importance of immediate treatment for hearing loss.

In addition to hearing loss, rheumatoid arthritis is closely associated with pain. Sufferers of the condition are enduring a reduced quality of life due to pain. The good news is that there are already pain management options such as curcumin supplements that are widely believed to be very helpful to individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
