New research showed that wine consumption can trigger gout flares. Gout happens when there is a buildup of excess amounts of uric acid around the joints, such as in the big toe, ankles, feet, wrists and elbows. This often leads to episodes of redness, swelling and intense pain.

According to the American Journal of Medicine, wine consumption can possibly trigger recurrent gout attacks. Tuhina Neogi, M.D., Boston University School of Medicine professor, stated that many of her patients could not sniff wine without experiencing a gout attack. It led her to think that wine could potentially trigger recurrent bouts of the disease. In research led by Dr. Neogi, researchers found that consumption of one serving of wine, beer or liquor did not increase the risk for gout attacks. However, when two drinks were consumed in a 24-hour period, it increased the risk by 36 percent.
"The same study also found that two to four drinks equated to an increase of 50 percent. Researchers believed that the percentage continued to rise when the amount of alcohol consumption also increased," added O'Sullivan.
It was also found that the risk was higher in individuals who consumed purine-rich foods such as pork, beef and fish as well as those who used diuretics. Diuretics are known to increase blood levels of uric acid. On the other hand, researchers believed that consuming colchicine and other gout drugs could reduce the effects of alcohol.
Gout flares can be very difficult to deal with, and this is why many patients are resorting to a wide variety of remedies just to improve their condition. It has not been established yet whether or not wine can truly trigger gout attacks. However, health experts suggest that sufferers take precautions and just avoid the beverage.
