Periodontal disease is common among dental patients. It is characterized by the inflammation and infection of the gums, bone, ligaments, and root surfaces. These are the supporting structures of the teeth.
"Eventually, the teeth may be lost and a prosthodontist will have to replace the missing teeth with our dental implants," says Dr. Ishimoto. "Periodontal maintenance may be required once the patient exhibits symptoms such as gums that are red and swollen or bleed easily, and teeth that seem to have shifted or look longer."
Periodontal disease requires more frequent and more in-depth gum and bone care therapy so that the mouth can remain healthy.
