South Florida Pill Mill Operator Gets 14 Years in Federal Prison, Miami Drug Rehab Comments

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 10, 2015 ) Miami, FL -- Most are lead to believe Florida's history of being a pill mill state are long behind the Sunshine State, but the arrest of the $15 million grossing pill mill operator, Joel Shumrak's arrest reopens the case for Florida harboring pill mill operators. Shumark has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison on charges of selling upwards of hundreds of thousands of addicts prescription medications without medical merit. He operated in Fort Lauderdale, FL and Tucker, GA, providing southern states including Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, among others stores of addictive opiate based medications and anxiety prescriptions to addicts, according to the Sun Sentinel. Law enforcement officials have seized more than $8 million of Shumrak's assets in offshore bank accounts. He has pleaded guilty, and as a part of his plea bargain, his wife will retain their home in Boca Raton and retirement fund. Miami Drug Rehab is a drug treatment facility in Miami. The addiction treatment center is appalled by Shumark's behavior, claiming his actions make it difficult for those with legitimate injuries to have access necessary for them to function normally.

An associate from the drug treatment facility in Miami comments, "As addiction professionals it's our job to help people suffering from prescription medication disorders to get off of the substances tethering them to the disease of addiction- but in Shumark's case, he didn't care if the prescriptions he was handing out were merited or not, as long as he profited from them. There's a distinct difference between addiction to prescription medication and a legitimate need for painkillers- because of his actions this quintessential line has been besmirched. The people who will suffer aren't just large scale pill mill operators, but people who legitimately need prescription painkillers.

"When prescription addiction becomes an issue- or the signs are starting to arise from substance abuse- then we try to step in, but in the case for those with the medical merit for those prescriptions, their liberties are compromised by illegal operations like Shumark's parading under the guise of helping people."

Shumrak's lawyer, Bernard Cassidy, is quoted by the Sun Sentinel, commenting on his client's behalf, regarding his own struggle with substance abuse,

"Although the defendant has not had an addiction to drugs or alcohol in decades, [he] does have a personality that tends towards addiction; the crimes that led him to this sentencing were brought on in part due to his compulsion towards moeny, obtaining it, shielding it from others, [he] is concerned that when he is eventually released and destitute, he will return to the previous drug or alcohol addiction and believes that some treatment.. . . will be helpful in his rehabilitation."
