Miami Drug Rehab Comments on Inpatient Rehab. Treatment and How Insurance Companies Impede Recovery

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 11, 2015 ) Miami, FL -- The addiction treatment industry revolves around rehabilitating addicts of drug and alcohol use disorders- insurance companies are supposed to allow recovering addicts- recover- but that's not what's happening, according to the Post Star. Karine Montanye lost her son to heroin addiction after he spent three years trying to beat the disease. His continual efforts to get his insurance to cover inpatient rehabilitation plundered when the company repeatedly sent him to outpatient rehabilitation, where he would relapse. The times he did attend inpatient rehabilitation, he was only covered for one week of treatment. The Post Star outlines what insurance companies deem as acceptable outpatient rehabilitation practices,

"Most insurance companies require substance users to fail at outpatient treatment before approving them for inpatient care. Some even require a full cycle of outpatient rehabilitation before counting as a 'failure.' If a patient uses again two weeks into outpatient care, it doesn't count as a failure, because he or she didn't complete the cycle."

Miami Drug Rehab provides addiction treatment for both alcohol and drug use disorders in South Florida. The drug treatment facility in Miami accepts most major insurances, and hopes future policies will compel insurance companies around the nation to better equip recovering addicts to successfully enroll in the level of treatment necessary for achievement. An associate from the heroin rehab center comments,

"The stories you hear are terrible and nightmarish. No parent wants to have to watch their child pass from addiction, especially when the tools of treatment are staring back at them, barred by a rejection notice from a third party- a third party who is supposed to be taking care of public welfare. As far as we've seen, insurance can make or break someone's recovery, granting either life or death. Speedy policy amendments must be put in place to avoid preventable deaths. There's just no reason why recovering addicts should have to fail first to prove merit of treatment.

"Withdrawal should be an indicator alone that someone with a physical dependence to an addictive substance will need inpatient treatment to redress addiction mentally. It's a no-brainer in the addiction and recovery field, yet we leave the deliberation of granting funding for treatment to 'professionals' who are not involved with the treatment process at all- without any real working knowledge of the psychological and physical effects of addiction to begin with. In this way, the system is intrinsically flawed. Treatment centers should have a hand in the ultimate determination of necessary treatment."
