The recent research was conducted by the Arizona Arthritic Center's research assistant professor Sheley Kasle, PhD, at the university of Arizona. The Arthritis Foundation funded the recent studies that were a part of Kasle's larger research project. That project was called the Close Relationships and Arthritis Studies, which was formerly known as the Couples and Arthritis Studies. It aims at understanding the link between relationship quality and healthy outcomes, especially for individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis as well as their spouses or partners.

According to Dr. Kasle, they administered questionnaires and examined medical records to over 100 coupled patients in the study. She aimed at understanding the level of mutuality when it comes to close relationships to a certain degree that people would want to know what the other person is feeling and thinking. She also added that mutuality doesn't equate to love mainly because people can love each other, but they may also have communication patterns that do not coincide with the definition of mutuality.
The American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation also funded a parallel study where Dr. Kasle focused on male patients. The results revealed that both men and women gained the same advantages. Women experienced less depression and anxiety as well as less arthritis impact, especially when doing their daily activities. They also reported less physical disability. The findings of the studies were published in the journal called Arthritis Care & Research.
