Researchers Revealed Osteoarthritis Patients Have Become More Sedentary Than Originally Believed

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 30, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- It is not surprising that arthritis patients, such as those suffering from osteoarthritis, live more painful and immobile lives. They not only suffer from pain, but are also subjected to various physical limitations. However, despite the presence of several pain relief treatments such as drugs, it seems that the problem is only getting worse.

Researchers revealed that osteoarthritis patients have become more sedentary than originally believed. This means that there are about 40 percent of male patients and 56 percent of female sufferers who are absolutely inactive.

"This news is very alarming considering that immobility is one of the major causes of various conditions that could lead to life-threatening situations," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The Arthritis & Rheumatism journal, which is the American College of Rheumatology's monthly publication, released a study that found there were less than 1 in 7 men and 1 in 12 women who suffered from knee osteoarthritis and who were unable to meet the physical activeness level set by the federal guidelines. This demonstrates that the problem associated with the sedentary lifestyle of patients was more pervasive than previously thought.

Physical inactivity is construed as being unable to engage in activity, whether it is moderate or vigorous, for a minimum of 10 minutes at any time of the week. Health experts strongly suggest that patients ensure they are physically active.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, people (especially arthritis patients) should practice having moderate-intensity to low-impact activity at least 150 minutes per week. The level of inactivity is found to be higher than before, mainly because the former studies depended on self-supporting rather than objective measurements.

Rowland W. Chang, M.D., MPH, Northwestern University's professor of preventive medicine, believes it is not a secret that people who suffer from arthritis are not particularly active. The absence or lack of physical activity has always been a major health issue to confront among arthritis patients. The importance of physical activity should not be overlooked, as it can significantly help reduce pain and other symptoms such as depression and fatigue.

"There are many fun activities that patients can engage in to become physically active on a daily basis. These activities can significantly help them improve their overall condition," added O'Sullivan.

Many arthritis sufferers are resorting to various treatment options, including natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements. According to users of glucosamine supplements, they have experienced significant pain relief and improved mobility after weeks of using the natural alternative (www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
