The SWAT (Stretch Wrap And Tuck) Tourniquet takes its name from the special police unit where it was heavily developed. In a penetrating wound injury or high fracture, where heavy loss of arterial blood in the extremities becomes a danger, the SWAT-Tourniquet is used to stem the flow. It can be placed high in the armpit or groin area to clamp the artery and stabilize the injury until help can arrive or be sought.
