The knee is the intersection for three bones: the femur or thigh bone, the tibia or shin bone, and the patella which is better known as the knee cap. The quadriceps tendon attaches to the top of the knee cap,and on the underneath, the connective tissue called the patellar tendon continues down the leg and connects the bottom of the knee cap to the top of the tibia (shin bone).
The knee cap rests in a groove called the trochlea, where it can slide backwards and forwards. Four other tendons are also involved and attach the thigh bone to either the shin bone or the tibia. These additional tendons act to keep the leg aligned.
