Florida Prison Guards Arrested for Dealing Opiates

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 16, 2015 ) Miami, FL -- Two Bradford County prison guards were arrested for selling opiates inside of of Florida State Prison, which houses the state's death row inmates, according to Bradenton. Those arrested are Major Charles Gregory Combs and Dylan Oral Hillard. Eight others are under investigation and have been suspended without pay. The ex-prison guards were buying Oxycodone to smuggle inside the prison. Allegedly, they purchased the pills from those with legitimate prescriptions. Detectives investigated Hillard for a prolonged period of time, and eventually closed in on him when he purchased almost $1,000 worth of Oxycodone from an undercover agent. Combs had a 14 year career with the prison. Miami Drug Rehab is a drug and alcohol addiction treatment center in South Florida floored by the findings of the recent investigation. The treatment facility asserts those employed to work on the staff of prisons should be required to take prevention and addiction courses to help employees understand more about the disease of addiction.

Bradenton quotes McKinley Lewis, the communications director for the Florida Department of Corrections, "The Department has zero tolerance for the actions taken by Mr. Hillard and Mr. Combs and will continue to provide investigative assistance and fully cooperate with the requests of the BCSO to ensure that a thorough investigation is completed,"

An associate from the treatment center, Miami Drug Rehab comments, "The actions of these two guards don't equate to the defamation of the entire prison, but it does call into question if we're doing enough to educate prison employees about the nature of addiction. Many of those incarcerated suffer from substance use disorders, and require a certain sensitivity to help overcome those disorders. Knowing what to look for when one is using drugs, and how to identify behaviors of drug dealers may have been able to pinpoint drug offences months before."
