Research Shows The Brain May Potentially Help Prevent The Likelihood Of Common Knee Injury

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 07, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- Knee injuries are highly prevalent among the aging population, and those who engage in physical activities regularly. An injury may take time to heal and can jeopardize the ability of people to do their daily routines. The good news is that something can be done to reduce one's risk for injury.

Research shows the brain may potentially help prevent the likelihood of a common knee injury. According to researchers, it may be helpful to use the mind rather than the legs to prevent some knee injuries. This finding was revealed after the researchers conducted the study in 2009.

"There are many areas of the brain that are still left unexplored. It is not surprising that it has the potential to help reduce the likelihood of injuries," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

In the study that was published in the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and conducted by the researchers from the University of Michigan, participants were made to perform squats using only one leg. They performed until the leg was tired and shaky. According to researchers, it could be useful to experiment and wear down leg muscles as injuries often take place when people, such as athletes, are wobbly and tired.

The researchers also assessed the reactions of participants to various movement commands such as jumping. They found out that both legs, even the one that did not experience fatigue, demonstrated similar diminished responses that could potentially result in injury to the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament. There are four major ligaments that stabilize and provide support to the knee joint and one is the ACL. The prevalence of ACL injuries is increasing, and this is something that should not be taken for granted because it can increase one's risk of knee osteoarthritis later in life.

Scott McClean, PhD, assistant professor of Michigan's School of Kinesiology and lead researcher, believes that the brain has a major influence on the effects of the activities in both legs. Since they did not fatigue the other leg, but it still ended up weary, there was a chance that it was the brain that was getting tired.

Dr. McClean added that the brain might be too tired to make the right decisions and transmit the correct information down, even to the leg that was not supposed to be tired. Today, the studies on the prevention techniques for ACL injuries are focusing on training and strengthening the muscles that provide support in the knee joint.

Individuals with arthritis and those who want to improve their overall knee health often resort to natural alternatives, such as curcumin supplements. Curcumin contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and is believed to be an effective pain management option (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
