Gloucester Sees Immediate Response in New Pilot Program for Drug Addicts

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 13, 2015 ) Boston, MA -- Boston may adopt Gloucester's new drug policy after seeing initial success. According to the Philadelphia Tribune the Gloucester Police Department has reported 17 drug users have turned in their opiates in exchange for immediate addiction treatment. Boston's mayor, Marty Walsh is entertaining the idea of implementing a similar policy for his own city, which is heralded as one of the largest drug hubs in the nation. On average, one to two addicts take advantage of Gloucester's policy. From the surrender of illegal drug paraphernalia aspiring recovering addicts are walked through a three hour admittance program where they are placed in a local treatment center, and map out a clear course of action and treatment plan, all under the watchful eyes of an "angel" assigned to each recovering addict from the police department. Many angels are recovered addicts themselves. Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston applauds Gloucester's new initiative and encourages Boston's local government to implement similar treatment policies immediately.

According to the Philadelphia tribune, paying for treatment thus far has not been an obstacle of the new program. Gloucester reports not spending over $1,000 on treatment or related costs- and any such fees have come from pools of drug seizure funds. The treatment is funded in large by state funding, and a number of drug and alcohol treatment centers around the nation have pledged to pay for the cost of those without insurance to get the addiction care they need.

An associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston comments, "Gloucester's program is going to make a difference in the lives of everyone participating in the program and beyond- because when word gets out that there is local aide for addiction, there will be fonts of addicts rushing in to escape the misery of addiction. Every state should have policies like this in place to help those with the disease of addiction overcome its grip. If we were more focused on treatment and less focused on making an arrest, we might not have one of the highest overdose rates in the country. Fortunately, I think people are finally starting to make the connection to addiction equating treatment."
