(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 30, 2015 ) West Palm Beach, FL -- According to Sun Sentinel, investigators claim the 10 pounds of what looked like candy that was seized during a drug sting, was actually methamphetamine. The "candies" were wrapped in packaging labeled using Spanish words such as "Pinata", court records also stated that some of the drugs were made to look like lollipops.
A team of investigators from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, Broward Sheriff's Office and Sunrise police arrested Jorge Maldonado, 24 and traced the source of the drugs to his residence in Bradenton. Maldonado has since been indicted on federal charges of conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute the drug.
There have also been at a few other cases related to methamphetamine being posed as candy. Another Bradenton man was arrested earlier this month in a related case, as well as three men being arrested in Tamarac on similar charges.
Law enforcement authorities in the South Florida region have raise alarm over the past few weeks about a multitude of drugs which authorities claim are being manufactured to appear as hard candy. Authorities say the drugs are particularly dangerous due to children and adults who may have access to them, consuming them not knowing that they are drugs and not candy.
According to reports, last month Miami-Dade police seized "candies" which they discovered were coated with ethylone, a synthetic drug which induces similar effects to the hallucinogen commonly referred to as "flakka".
