Researchers Revealed That Female Minorities Are Most Susceptible To Knee Osteoarthritis

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 29, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Knee osteoarthritis is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. There are certain factors that make one more likely to suffer from the condition such as age, genes and injury. However, recently scientists have discovered something about who is more at risk of developing the condition.

Researchers revealed that female minorities are most susceptible to knee osteoarthritis. This study was presented at the American College of Rheumatology and it not only identified African-American women to be more at risk for knee osteoarthritis, but also for joint replacement surgery.

"The research also takes into account the lifetime risk of knee osteoarthritis for various segments of society. It also added that Hispanic women were more susceptible to the condition than Caucasian women and than men regardless of the race," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Elena Losina, PhD, Harvard Medical School's associate professor, aimed at identifying who is most susceptible to knee osteoarthritis and when it usually takes place. Knee osteoarthritis often occurs when the cartilage, which cushions the joint, experiences wear and tear. This typically results in pain, which can interfere with one's daily tasks. Unfortunately, there has not been a cure identified yet, aside from total knee replacement surgery.

Dr. Losina and her colleagues resorted to a computer simulation and used the information they obtained from the published studies about osteoarthritis. The model worked by estimating the risk for knee osteoarthritis, at varying time points, for African-American women as well as for Hispanic and Caucasian men and women.

It was found that the highest lifetime risk of 17 percent was among African-American women and the lowest being 10 percent in Caucasisan men, among people who were age 40. Among age 65, there was 11.3 percent African-American women, 10.5 percent for Hispanic female participants and 10 percent among Caucasian women. It was expected that there would be 6.8 percent among African-American women and 3.8 percent for Hispanic men.

According to the researchers, it may be that the risk was higher among the Hispanic and African-American women due to the high prevalence of obesity. Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor of knee osteoarthritis. Dr. Losina revealed that exercise, healthy diet and weight loss can be very helpful in reducing this risk.

Researchers also believe that since obesity increases one's risk for osteoarthritis, weight loss can be an effective preventive measure or treatment. It can also help lower one's need for procedures such as total knee replacement surgery.

There are several ways to reduce one's risk for knee osteoarthritis. Individuals who suffer from knee osteoarthritis often resort to various measures such as natural alternatives. There are many popular natural remedies today, and one is curcumin supplements. Curcumin supplements are believed to have strong anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce pain and inflammation caused by arthritis (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
