Medical Research Shows Omega 3 Fish Oil Benefits During Pregnancy

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 01, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- Pregnant women aren't getting enough Omega 3 Fish Oil. A study was done by Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and published in the Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism has shown that pregnant women are not getting enough DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Docosahexaenoic acid is a derivative of omega 3 fatty acids. It is an imperative part of a baby's development as DHA makes up 15 percent to 20 percent of the cerebral cortex and 30 percent to 60 percent of the retina. So, it is necessary for normal development of the fetus and important for a mother to not be deficient in this essential nutrient.

Contributing study author Catherine Field, a registered dietitian and professor of nutrition at the University of Alberta, states the low intake of DHA in moms is linked to babies with lower cognitive development which is often associated with crying and poor sleep, as well as lower IQs and attention deficit disorders. She also says, "during pregnancy omega-3 fatty acids are required for mom's body to produce more red blood cells so that she can provide enough nutrients and oxygen to her growing baby." The International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids advises that pregnant and lactating women consume at least 200 mg of DHA per day.

The researchers monitored 600 women before and directly after pregnancy to study their intake of Omega 3 fatty acids, particularly DHA. They found that only twenty-seven percent of the women during their pregnancy were at daily recommended levels for DHA. When checked three months post partum, only twenty-five percent were meeting the healthy levels. These are not good numbers when considering how important fetal brain development is. Educating pregnant women on the importance of Omega 3 fatty acids as an essential nutrient to be consumed during pregnancy is imperative.

Nutriden wants pregnant women to know that they can feel safe taking their Omega 3 supplement to obtain their correct dosage of daily Omega 3s. Nutriden gel caps are derived from the following wild fish species: sardines, anchovies, herring, and mackerel and harvested following sustainable fishing practices, from the purest and cleanest deep ocean waters. During pregnancy no one wants to consume toxins like mercury, which can be found in even wild caught fish. This is not a problem one will have to worry about with Omega 3 supplements.

Studies are showing Omega 3 is an essential nutrient for our bodies, including pregnant and lactating mothers and their babies. Nutriden's Omega 3 product is available to help provide the recommended daily allowances of Omega 3s for not only these groups, but everyone.
