(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 08, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- A research study done at Washington State University, found unexpectedly that omega-3 fatty acids - eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – halt the proliferation of prostate cancer cells. The prostate is a gland only found in men as it is part of the male reproductive system. Therefore, only men can get prostate cancer.
So what can this study mean for today's man? According to the American Cancer Society, other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society's estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for 2015 are about 220,800 new cases of prostate cancer and about 27,540 deaths from prostate cancer. They estimate that 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.
The lead scientist of the research study, Kathryn Meier stated, "We're the first to show that [omega-3s] work this way in cancer. The attention has mostly been on inflammation and diabetes but there has always been an interest in cancer, and we were the first to show this mechanism in any cancer cell at all. And we're using prostate cancer, which is the most controversial subject in omega 3s."
In the research study, prostate cancer cells were first treated with lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) to activate the cancer cells and then the Omega 3s EPA or DHA were added. The scientists found that if added before the LPA, EPA but not DHA reduced the number of viable cancer cells at 48 and 72 hours. The rapidity of the EPA effect suggested that it had activated the FFA4, which then bound to omega-3 fatty acids and inhibited cancer cell growth.
