Nutriden Study Says Omega 3 Increases Cognitive Ability

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 12, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- A study published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience took a look at cognitive ability and Omega 3 fatty acids. The researchers wondered if there could be a positive effect on cognitive abilities and possibly helping those who have Alzheimer's disease. With this information, doctors would be able to not only study the link between Alzheimer's disease and the positive effects of Omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaeonic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), they can also study the cognitive flexibility of those who do not have the Alzheimer's gene.

The researchers examined 40 cognitively intact adults between the ages of 65 and 75 with the APOE e4 polymorphism to investigate the relationship between Omega 3s and cognitive flexibility. They found this research to be important because as current and projected prevalence of Alzheimer's disease suggests an increase in the United States from 5.1 to 13.2 million by 2050 with healthcare expenditures related to this growth expected to surpass 1 trillion dollars. Therefore a successful strategy to promote healthy brain aging is of great interest to public health efforts and the United States economy.

"Recent research suggests that there is a critical link between nutritional deficiencies and the incidence of both cognitive impairment and degenerative neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease," study co-leader Aron Barbey, PhD, a professor of neuroscience, psychology, and speech and hearing science at the University of Illinois in Urbana, said in a university news release. "Our findings add to the evidence that optimal nutrition helps preserve cognitive function, slow the progression of aging, and reduce the incidence of debilitating diseases in healthy aging populations."

The researchers focused on aspects of brain function that are sometimes overlooked in research on aging, Zamroziewicz continue to state: "A lot of work in cognitive aging focuses on memory, but in fact cognitive flexibility and other executive functions have been shown to better predict daily functioning than memory does," she said. "Executive function" describes processes like planning, reasoning, paying attention, problem solving, impulse control and task switching. The findings suggest that consuming DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids might improve mental flexibility by boosting the size of the anterior cingulate cortex, according to the authors of the study.

Nutriden, a privately held Nutraceuticals company, wants the public to know all of the many benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids. While eating fish and other foods with omega 3 fatty acids in them may seem like the way to go, it often isn't enough. The Nutriden custom pharmaceutical grade Omega 3 Fish Oil formula is designed to meet the American Heart Association's recommended daily Omega 3 requirements as each dose has 600mg of Omega 3.
