Scientific Studies Show Turmeric Can Potentially Protect Brain Cells

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 14, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Turmeric is a medicinal spice that is used for an extensive range of medicinal purposes. It is a popular remedy for individuals who suffer from inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. The good news is that the potential therapeutic benefits of the spice have continually been being discovered or revealed by a variety of research studies.

Scientific studies show turmeric can potentially protect brain cells. As people age, their brain cells do not remain quick and strong. Eventually, the aging process exposes them to a variety of brain-related conditions such as memory-loss, which typically happens from wear and tear of the brain.

"Turmeric contains a highly therapeutic phytochemical called curcumin, which is believed to have high levels of antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties," said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

More and more research studies are being conducted to explore and validate the therapeutic benefits of the spice. According to several studies, turmeric can potentially protect brain cells and reduce one's risk of Alzheimer's disease. Turmeric's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds are believed to contribute to the spice's ability to protect brain cells.

The University of Illinois conducted a laboratory study recently, and the aim of the researchers is to determine whether turmeric could afford protection to cultured rat cells against damage caused by beta-amyloid. Amyloid-beta is a protein molecule that is typically found in individuals with Alzheimer's disease.

Amyloid-beta is detrimental to brain health mainly because it triggers increased production of free radicals, which causes further oxidative damage. It is neurotoxic mainly because it has the ability to kill neurons. What makes this molecule even more threatening is that the dangers and damage it causes typically happens in the Hippocampus, which is responsible for the essential aspects of memory and other cognitive functions.

In a study conducted by the researchers from the University of California, it was found that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin have the potential ability to disrupt the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. The researchers also noticed a remarkable suppression of the formation of amyloid-beta.

One of the most interesting things about turmeric is that it has been used as a kitchen ingredient and medicinal spice in various parts of the world, including India. The use of turmeric in India has been a very important part of the country's cuisine and culture. It is also important to note that India has the lowest cases of Alzheimer's disease nowadays.

People can take advantage of turmeric by taking curcumin supplements. The most recommended curcumin supplements are those that contain a bioavailability enhancing ingredient called BioPerine, which is a black pepper extract (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Extract-Vegetarian/dp/B00VSVKJ8I).
