Drug Rehab Baltimore Comments on Harford County Receiving Grant to Expand Anti-Heroin Outreach

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 16, 2015 ) Baltimore, MD -- According to the Baltimore Sun, Harford County will expand its effort to fight heroin use among young teens upon receiving a burst of funding from the state.

Harford County was awarded a $120,00 grant by the Maryland Behavioral Health Administration towards its efforts in battling against heroin. The funding will be allocated for two prevention specialists to widen the county's outreach to middle schools and community organizations, saiD County Spokesperson Cindy Mumby. Mumby also shared that the positions will not involve new hires. existing employees from the Department of Community Services will be utilized.

Harford County has also partnered with 211, a national, free and confidential resource service for those suffering from addiction. The county plans to work with 211 as a means for developing a protocol for operators to help families and individuals struggling with addiction.

The county has spent the past few month making efforts to target young teens and their parents with warnings about the dangers of using heroin. A previous grant which the county received has been used in part for public awareness efforts such as billboards, which are in rotation around the county warning that Harford County kids are trying heroin as young as 11 years old and urging parents to "talk to your kids before heroin does,"

The new outreach announced that it will target middle school students with the same style of drug awareness program which was previously aimed at high school teachers, which are usually done through parent-teacher associations around prom time.

Mumby suggests that prevention is key, "We are finding this drug is reaching younger and younger kids, so we have got to be where those kids are being affected. We want to make parents aware that this is happening throughout Harford County, not just in certain schools."

In addition to providing prevention efforts for young teens, older residents and employees are also being targeted for heroin prevention. Harford County prevention programs are also available to business and faith-based groups. Mumby shared that the new funding will allow more outreach business who are interested in providing prevention programs for their employers.

Heroin prevention has become a priority for governments around Maryland and the governor has made it a top focus for his administration upon taking office in January.

An associate from Drug Rehab Baltimore comments "I am thankful for the efforts that the state of Maryland is making in fighting the heroin epidemic in our state. Although we've been fighting for many years to battle against heroin, I am positive with the new and restructured efforts will be more effective than those in the past. I am excited to see a decline in rates of heroin-related cases here in Maryland."
