Drug Prescription Drug Abuse Is A Major Public Health Issue in North Carolina

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 17, 2015 ) Charlotte, NC -- According to the News Observer, The North Carolina Medical Society which is dedicated to protecting the health and welfare of North Carolinians is being faced with a public health emergency due to opioid abuse.

However, North Carolina is not alone, according to the National Institute for Drug Abuse, in 2012, an estimated 2.1 million people in the United States suffered from substance abuse disorders in relation to prescription opioid pain relievers. This number includes both people with chonic pain who may abuse their prescription medications and addicts who purchase them off of the street or doctor shop for new prescriptions.

The number of unintentional overdose deaths from prescription pain medications have soared in the U.S., having more than quadrupled since 1999. the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that more Americans are dying yearly from prescription drug overdoses than motor vehicle accidents. According to data from the N.C. Division of Public Health, more than 1,00 people in our state die of prescription drug abuse annually.

A major complication in the opioid drug abuse epidemic is that more than 100 million people suffer from chronic pain in the U.S., according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, and for some using opioid pain relievers is their only source of relief. There has been a tool set in place to help prevent doctor shopping and prescription drug abuse, the Controlled Substance Reporting System (CSRS), an online registry to track prescriptions for controlled substances and to assure patients aren't abusing their medications. However, only a small number of practitioners are using CSRS. In response, lawmakers have petitioned for legislation which will make it a felony to no0t register and use CSRS.

A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Charlotte comments "It's pretty scary that prescription drug abuse is such a big issue here in North Carolina. As an employee of an addiction treatment center here in North Carolina, I get to see how prevalent prescription drug abuse is among North Carolinians firsthand. And whats even more sad is that many of these people who are admitted to our center were prescribed these drugs but ended up becoming addicted to them and some started out abusing prescription drugs then transitioned to heroin. The state has been working hard to combat the epidemic, I believe with continued efforts that there could be a significant decline, we just have to keep pressing."
