Drug and Alcohol Rehab Denver Comments On State Officials Trying To Curb Prescription Drug Abuse

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 18, 2015 ) Denver, CO -- Officials in Denver are working to address the problem of prescription drug abuse throughout the state of Colorado. According to Denver's ABC 7 News, Governor John Hickenlooper has participated in a round table discussion with Denver Health, the Department of Health and Human Services and other stakeholders regarding the issue of prescription drug abuse in Colorado.

Governor Hickenlooper also recently helped in launching a public awareness campaign, "Take Meds Seriously", which was created on the basis of addressing the growing issue of prescription drug abuse.

According to reports, Colorado averages about 35 deaths monthly due to unintentional drug overdose deaths and ranks at number twelve in the nation for abuse and misuse of prescription drugs.

One Denver man by the name of Scottie shared his addiction story sharing that his addiction had began 15 years ago after undergoing surgery for a hernia. After Scottie's procedure he says he was given a huge bottle of Percocet and what started out as taking one daily turned into two, and so on. Scottie eventually developed a tolerance, causing him to take even more pills. Scottie admits he began taking up to 80 milligram doses of "oxies" and began illegally obtaining prescription pills and even selling them. After being threatened with losing his family Scottie realized it was time for a change. He encourages those in need of treatment not to be ashamed of reaching out for help, and he also believes Governor Hickenlooper is making the right steps in his efforts to fight back.

A local treatment facility suggests that painkillers are just the pill form of heroin. "In part, people think it's safe and so they think 'well I know I was prescribed to take one, but it's safe and you know I want more relief' or 'I want more of this, so I'll take two,' Arthur Schut, President and CEO of Arapahoe House said.

Colorado state officials strongly encourage those who may have a prescription drug use problem or a problem with any substance to seek help. and call the substance abuse and mental health services administration at 1-800-662-HELP.

An associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Denver comments "The prescription drug abuse epidemic here in Denver is growing more and more each day. And sadly, when people can no longer access the prescription pills which they have become addicted to, they turn to heroin. It's essentially an ongoing cycle that must stop if we want to save our city and state from this growing problem."
