Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston Comments on Spending Plan Funds Being Boosted for Substance Abuse

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 20, 2015 ) West Palm Beach, FL -- As the city of Boston is being faced with an unprecedented crisis of opioid abuse, Governor Charlie Baker has asked Legislature for $27.8 million in extra state spending for treatment and prevention, according to The Boston Globe. The money Governor Baker has asked for would help pay for several recommendations made by Baker's Opioid Working Group, in which he was delegated to in February after over 1,000 people died of drug overdoses in 2014.

If Governor Baker's plan for boosting funds for treatment and prevention, the new expenditure would cause a 21 percent increase in spending for substance abuse services in the fiscal year starting July 1st. More than half of the money, $14 million, would help in boosting the state's payments for residential substance abuse treatment services. An additional $5.8 million would help put an end to the practice of women who are civilly committed to addiction treatment being held among criminals at the state prison, instead these women will now be transferred to a state-run treatment program. The plan also includes a $3.8 million for substance abuse-prevention programs within schools. The remainder of the money will be delegated toward increasing substance abuse services for those covered by the state's MassHealth Program for low-income individuals, in addition to educational initiatives by the Department of Public Health.
The budget will also include a provision for requiring pharmacists to report opioid prescriptions within 24 hours of filing them, instead of using the current practice which allows them up to seven days. This will also help address complaints geared towards the state's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program which is used for checking to determine if patients are "doctor shopping' or obtaining prescriptions from multiple physicians. Other issues with the system such as ease of use will also be addressed when the state hires a vendor to help improve the system.

A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston comments "I think what Governor Baker is doing is awesome! In my opinion the issue of substance abuse gets swept under the rug a lot these days so it's very impressive to see that our Governor is taking a stand and asking for more funding to help treat and prevent substance abuse. I am confident that with more funding for treatment and prevention initiatives that we will see a significant decline in substance abuse rates and overdose deaths."
