Research Suggests Addiction Relapse Prevention Can Be Made Possible By Erasing Drug-Related Memories

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 28, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- According to the Parent Herald, new research suggests that recovering addicts can help prevent relapse by selectively erasing drug-related memories through a new process developed by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) Florida campus.

The new research has been built based on a 2013 study published in the Biological Psychiatry journal by associate professor Courtney Miller, the research team's leader.

In her earlier study Miller suggested "Our memories make us who we are, but some of these memories can make life very difficult. Not unlike in the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, we're looking for strategies to selectively eliminate evidence of past experiences related to drug abuse or a traumatic event. Our study shows we can do just that in mice - wipe out deeply ingrained drug-related memories without harming other memories."

The team of researchers discovered that drug-related memories could be selectively erased by targeting actin, the protein which provides the structural scaffold supporting memories within the brain. However, actin is also critically important for the body therefore any tampering to generally and indiscriminately inhibit actin, even once, could end fatally.

Miller and her team of researchers discovered a new way to target brain actin with better accuracy. The new and safer route to get to the actin in the brain uses "blebbistatin", a compound which acts on the "non-muscle myosin II", a molecular motor which supports memory formation.

The researchers found that a single injection of blebbistatin is effective enough to successfully disrupt the long-term storage of drug-related memories, in addition to helping block relapse for at least a month, according to results from the animal models of methamphetamine addiction.

Once clinically tested, the new selective memory erasing therapeutic pharmaceutical protocols which are now being developed at TSRI can potentially also be used to treat other neuropsychiatric disorders besides drug addiction, such as post traumatic stress and phobic anxiety disorders.

A medical associate from Drug Rehab Orlando comments "I am hopeful that this treatment passes during clinical testing. I believe this treatment could be a breakthrough in addiction treatment methods. One of the hardest parts of recovery is preventing relapse. If we can help prevent relapse with the use of treatments like so, I think the success rates of recovery will be significantly higher."
