(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 31, 2015 ) West Palm Beach, FL -- According to Tech Times, Tetris, a popular tile-matching puzzle game, first released in June of 1984 has been suggested to provide more than just a simple gaming experience. A new study conducted by a team of research psychologists in Australia suggests that playing Tetris can help curb addictive behaviors.
According to the study, playing the game for just three minutes was found to be effective in helping to reduce cravings, and not just cravings for food but also cravings for drugs, sex, sleep, cigarettes, and more.
For the study, the team of researchers gathered a group of participants consisting of 31 undergraduate students, 15 of whom were instructed to play Tetris at three minute intervals. The participants were also asked to report the cravings they experiences before and after playing the game based on a scale of zero to 100. Upon collection of data, researchers found that the craving levels of the participants were typically lowered by almost 14 percent after playing Tetris. Researchers concluded that playing the game could be helpful in managing cravings among addicts because it can be used as a distraction from damaging behavior.
Study researcher Jackie Andrade of Plymouth University says the Tetris effect occurs because cravings involve imagining the indulgence in an activity or the consumption of a particular substance. By playing a visually interesting game, it helps to occupy the mental process which supports imagery making it difficult to clearly imagine something else while playing Tetris at the same time. Andrade also added that playing Tetris reduces cravings for food, drugs, and activities from 70 percent to 56 percent, and that this experiment marks the first time for showing that cognitive interference can be used outside laboratory settings as a means to curb cravings for substances and other activities other than eating.
People played the game 40 times on average but the effect did not seem to wear off. This finding is potentially important because an intervention that worked solely because it was novel and unusual would have diminishing benefits over time as participants became familiar with it," said Jon May of Plymouth University, according to Tech Times. The researchers concluded that the effect of Tetris on cravings remained consistent for a week and on all sorts of cravings.
