In one study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, researchers surveyed Swedish women about their diets and found over the course of more than seven years, long-term consumption of more than one serving of fatty fish each week was tied to a lower risk of developing the rheumatoid arthritis. Lead author, Daniela Di Giuseppe and her research group followed over 32,000 women born between 1914 and 1948 who were part of the Swedish Mammography Cohort. Information about fish consumption was gathered from diet questionnaires sent to women in 1987 and 1997. As the first study of its kind looking directly at Omega 3 fatty acids and rheumatoid arthritis, the findings were significant.
Omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, have been studied for rheumatoid arthritis as well as dozens of other inflammatory conditions, including heart disease. A 2010 meta-analysis found that fish oil significantly decreased joint tenderness and stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis patients and reduced or eliminated the use of drugs for those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.
