Studies Suggest Fish Oil Supplements May Be A Safer Option Than Eating Fish

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 14, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- Omega-3 fats are healthy fats that play a major role in the proper functioning of the body. They can be obtained by eating food items such as certain types of fish. However, due to mercury contamination associated with eating fish, an increasing number of people are turning to fish oil supplements.

Fish oil supplements are considered a safer option than eating fish. There are certain types of fish that have high levels of omega-3 such as sardines, herring, halibut and tuna. Consumption of these omega-3-rich food is associated with increased protection against cardiovascular disease and other ailments.

"Some of the best supplements nowadays contain the highest concentration of omega-3 fatty acids," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The mercury risk of eating fish was noted by the Harvard School of Public Health, Louisiana University's Marine Consortium, and Norway's National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research. It was revealed that the top reason why people in the United States are exposed to methyl-mercury is because of consumption of shellfish and fish.

The effects of mercury in the body can be alarming as it is associated with the occurrence of heart damage, central nervous system, problems with brain development in young or unborn children, and immune system damage.

The University of Pittsburgh conducted a study in 2007 that provided very alarming results. It was found that commercially available fish not only had higher mercury levels, but also 1.9 times more selenium and 1.7 times more arsenic.

The good news is that, according to reputable scientific studies, many of the trusted fish oil supplement manufacturers do not pose any threat at all. In the report made by ConsumerLab.com, it was found that out of 41 popular fish oil supplements, not even one was found to be contaminated with PCBs or mercury.

The Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital conducted a co-op study that revealed 5 of the renowned brands of fish oil supplements did not pose any threat in regards to mercury levels. The researchers noted that it was either because the oil came from mercury-free fish sources or herbal manufacturers used a process to remove mercury and other toxins.

Using fish oil supplements is believed to be a better alternative because herbal companies follow manufacturing standards that involve the removal of environmental pollutants, including mercury. Consumers can fully take advantage of the therapeutic benefits offered by omega-3 fats by using the most trusted fish oil supplement brands today (www.amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K/).
