Hochberg, M.D., from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, reported that participants who took a pain relief drug experienced 50.2% pain reduction while those who were given glucosamine and chondroitin experienced 50.1%. The pain was measured on the Western Ontario and McMaster osteoarthritis index (WOMAC).
MOVES is considered to be the third major clinical trial that showed a benefit of the use of the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin in osteoarthritis.
The New England Journal of Medicine published a multicenter study called Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), which was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The study involved 1,583 individuals with knee osteoarthritis, which were divided into a placebo and glucosamine group. This study was conducted in 2006, and was considered to be the first that showed the efficacy of both ingredients for osteoarthritis pain.
The good news is that there are supplements available nowadays that contain both glucosamine and chondroitin.
