With metal braces, patients are required to avoid hard foods such as whole apples and French bread which may damage the wires and brackets. Usually, patients are even restricted to just soft foods after beginning to wear metal braces, and they may soon afterward be allowed to eat harder foods only when they're sliced into smaller pieces first.
"Since these braces are easily removed and put on, patients can just discreetly pop them out before they eat," reveals Dr. Lockhart.
