Researchers Suggest Thousands May Die Due To The Use Of Pain Relief Drugs Each Year

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 30, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Arthritis is one of the most prevalent conditions nowadays that causes pain and suffering for individuals who have it. While pain relief drugs are often considered by many sufferers as a solution to their pain problem, the effects are temporary and they can place people in a life-threatening situation.

In a large international study funded by the UK Medical Research Council and British Heart Foundation, researchers said high doses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the risk of a major vascular event by around a third. Published in The Lancet medical journal in August 2013, the findings suggest that for every 1,000 people with an average risk of heart disease who take high-dose diclofenac or ibuprofen for a year, about three extra would have an avoidable heart attack, of which one would be fatal.

The increased risks are mainly a concern for long-term, high-dose users of these NSAIDs, particularly those who suffer chronic pain, such as arthritis.

"A short course of lower dose tablets purchased without a prescription, for example, for a muscle sprain, is not likely to be hazardous," said Colin Baigent, who led the study.

Studies such as these have encouraged consumers, especially those who suffer from arthritis, to become well-informed about the potentially safe and effective pain management options available for them. There are many natural alternatives that are believed to be as effective as pain relief drugs, but are safer to use. Glucosamine supplements are becoming increasing popular among sufferers looking for long-term methods to manage joint pain.

What makes using pain relief drugs disadvantageous is that they don't address the root cause of the problem. They are formulated to reduce or eliminate pain temporarily. The UK study also now indicates that they cause side effects that can be detrimental to the long-term health of sufferers.

Glucosamine supplements are believed to be very helpful for reducing arthritis pain. They are also believed to help repair the damage in the joint cartilage. Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance in the body, but as a person ages, the glucosamine levels in the body reduce.

Most resources recommend the use of glucosamine supplements that contain other natural ingredients. These ingredients include turmeric, MSM, and chondroitin (http://amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
