This is a full-function valve, unlike the more typical filters found on collapsible mini CPR masks, and controls the direction of air flow both from the rescue breather and back from the victim. This ensures proper directional flow, as well as preventing backwash or ejecta from the victim from reaching the rescue breather.
"This is a small mask," says Ms. Loehwing. "A key chain sized mask. It folds down into a little nylon pouch about the size of a key fob, and it attaches to your keys and goes in your pocket. The Mini CPR Keychain Mask folds out to a full-size breathing barrier. Instructions on the outward facing side direct placement. The semi-transparent shield covers the face of the victim and prevents contact, while allowing the rescue breather to monitor color and response. Centered on the shield is the one-way valve, which controls air flow.
