(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 09, 2015 ) A new study reveals that consumption of natural remedies can affect the cardiovascular health. Chinese physicians have reported a case of woman who were having CVD symptoms due to aconitine content. It is reported that use of this natural ingredient can be detrimental to the health.
A 45 year old Chinese woman was diagnosed with severe heart rhythm disorder, bidirectional ventricular tachycardia (BVT) that is associated with aconitine poisoning. BVT is a rare form of tachycardia (i.e. resting heart rate with more than 100 beats a minute) that is combined with unique pattern of ECG waves.
Upon further scrutiny it was revealed that the patient's blood was tested positive for aconitine that is produced by the Aconitum plant also called as devil's helmet or monkshood.
Though quite famous for its toxic effects, its used for many health benefits as per traditional Chinese medicine called Fuzi that uses the roots of Aconitum. This is because it is used in small doses for its anti-inflammatory properties and pain relieving effects.
Published by the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, Dr. Zhong Yi who is the lead author claimed that “management of potentially lethal ventricular tachyarrhythmia associated with aconitine poisoning presents a therapeutic challenge. In a previously published case, amiodarone was effective in suppressing the BVT. However, in our patient both lidocaine and amiodarone were ineffective.” He says that public should be warned about the consuming of this medicinal use of Fuzi.
