(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 10, 2015 ) Midwest City, OK -- Precision Dental Center, a dental practice in Midwest City, discusses the importance of white or tooth-colored fillings in the area.

Dr. Tennille Cheek-Covey, the owner of the Precision Dental Center, Midwest City dental practice, said: "Tooth-colored fillings in Midwest City are an alternative to traditional metal fillings and fall into two categories: direct and indirect. Direct restorations are composite resin applied in one appointment. Indirect restorations, which may be inlays or onlays, are made of porcelain or composite resin materials fabricated by a dental laboratory. These restorations usually take two appointments at our Oklahoma dental practice."

According to Dr. Cheek-Covey, the benefits of tooth-colored fillings compared to cheaper traditional dental amalgam fillings are: "it protects the natural tooth structure; there's minimal risk of an allergic reaction; no metal sensitivity; and optimal biocompatibility."

Although stronger and longer-lasting than the composite resin used in tooth-colored fillings, dental amalgam usually contains 43% to 54% of elemental liquid mercury which may be toxic or cause allergic reaction to some patients. Also, in the application of dental amalgam, some perfectly healthy tooth structure may have to be sacrificed.

Applying tooth-colored or composite fillings generally takes longer to complete than amalgam or metal filling since the tooth has to be kept clean and dry while the cavity is being filled with the resin mix. According to Dr. Cheek-Covey, the composite mix is applied in layers, using a special light after each layer to "cure" or harden the surface before the next layer is placed over it. For each applied layer, the dentist will shape the composite material to fit the tooth. At the end of the process, the dentist will polish the composite to make the treated tooth smooth and stain-resistant.

For procedures involving the use of the tooth-colored composite resins for inlays or onlays, Dr. Cheek-Covey describes the process thus: "After tooth preparation, impressions are taken of your teeth and a replica of your mouth is created for the dental laboratory. A temporary filling is placed onto the prepared tooth for protection. At the second appointment, the temporary filling is removed and the inlay or onlay is secured with an adhesive agent." Alternatively, she said, "The dentist may also utilize the CEREC digital impression system to create and mill the inlay or onlay during the same appointment, eliminating the need for a second tooth-colored fillings appointment in Midwest City."

The tooth-colored composite resin may also be used in bonding - a single-visit procedure to remove stains or discolorations or otherwise to change the size or shape of a patient's teeth to achieve a more symmetrical, gap-free and pleasing smile, according to Dr. Cheek-Covey. She describes the process thus: "The dentist may remove a very minor amount of tooth structure to maximize adhesion of the composite resin to the tooth, depending on the dentist's bonding technique. A tooth conditioning agent may be applied to the prepared tooth, followed by the application of an adhesive agent and the tooth-colored resin. The dentist will contour the resin to produce the desired aesthetic appearance and expose it to a special laser or curing light to harden the resin."

Finally, Dr. Cheek-Covey advises that "teeth that have been bonded or filled with composite resin, or restored with inlays or onlays, should receive the same meticulous care as natural teeth."
