Dogs can smell thyroid cancer, researchers say

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 10, 2015 ) Los Angeles, CA -- While presenting their study at the Endocrine Society, the entire team was in awe with the pooch's 'unbelievable' sense of smell to detect the health issue.

Though the Cancer Research UK said that using dogs would be impractical but the fact that dogs can 'sniff out' certain chemicals could lead to new observations and theories.

The thyroid is a gland that is located in the neck which produces hormones and regulates the metabolism level. Thyroid tumors are quite a rare see and are usually diagnosed by taking the hormone levels of blood by using a needle to extract cells for testing.

The job of smelling

Cancerous cells in the body can be detrimental and can be out of control at times. They have their own chemistry and release VOCs in the body weakening the immune system completely.

Canines possess 10 times the ability of smell receptors than in us humans and it is on them that they rely to pick out unique smell that are released by cancers. This approach by man's best friend has already produced promising results in many patients who are dealing with bowel and lung cancers.

Scientists from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) had reported that with proper training dogs can sniff out the difference between urine samples of patients with or without thyroid cancer.

Next step was to put the techniques to a test. Frankie, the German Shepherd was trained in such a way to lie down if the results of thyroid cancer are positive and turn away from the urine sample if the test is negative and clean.

34 patients who were planning to go to hospital for traditional method of testing were called in for trial. Out of 34, 30 were a correct diagnosis by the Hooch. There were two false positive and two patients who would have been incorrectly given the all clear.

Dr. Donald Bodenner, who is the cheif of endocrine oncology at UAMS said, “The capability of dogs to smell even the minute amounts is quite unbelievable. The medical community over the next few years is going to have a great appreciation for them.”

Few researchers are trying to find out the exact element canine is sniffing. Dr. Jason Wexler, an endocrinologist in Washington, DC claimed that “This is a fascinating, interesting study and has great potential in areas of the world where biopsy techniques are not easily accessible”.

Another thing to note is many people are quite reluctant to go under needle aspiration and if one can design a technique without any pricking, can have a great appeal and relief for many patients.

Symptoms of thyroid cancer

painless lump or swelling at the front of neck below Adam's apple

unexplained hoarseness that does not seem to go away even after few weeks

sore throat or difficulty in swallowing

pain in the neck

While it is okay to keep our health under check and thyroid free, it is also essential to take care of your dog's health especially if you are a pet owner. Frequent visit to Vet can keep your dog's health free from thyroid or cancer. There are many dogs cancer support medications that are absolutely natural and help in maintaining a healthy pet without any side effects.
